Carry them with you. Everywhere. Always.

The hardest part of losing a pet is the small disappearances. The empty space at your feet. The leash you keep grabbing out of habit. The keys you reach for, expecting them at the door, knowing they won't be.

This keychain doesn't bring them back. But it gives you something to touch when you reach for the keys.

Each piece is hand-cut from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and hand-painted with your pet's portrait — by a real artisan, with real brushes, in our small studio. The leather will deepen and soften with every pocket it lives in. In two years, it will look more beautiful than the day it arrived. In ten years, it will be an heirloom.

Why vegetable-tanned leather

Most modern leather is chrome-tanned in 24 hours using harsh chemicals. The result is a stiff, plastic-feeling material that cracks within a few years.

Vegetable tanning is a 200-year-old process that takes weeks. The hide is steeped in oak and chestnut bark extracts, slowly drawing out impurities and replacing them with natural tannins. The leather that emerges is supple, breathable, and alive — it ages with you, taking on the marks of your daily life.

This is the only material we trust to make heirlooms.

How it is made

  1. Day 1 — Photo review. Our artisan studies your pet's photo, traces a hand-drawn template, and prepares your chosen leather color.
  2. Day 2 — Digital proof. We send you a hand-drawn rendering showing colors, expression, and engraving. You approve, or revise (free, unlimited).
  3. Days 3-21 — Hand-carving + painting. The leather is cut, edges burnished, surface tooled, and your pet's face hand-painted in waterproof artist pigments. Sealed with three layers of clear protective finish.
  4. Days 22-28 — Hardware + engraving. The brass attachment ring is set, optional engraving is hand-stamped on the reverse.
  5. Day 29 — Quality check + ship. Photographed, gift-boxed, shipped free worldwide.

Care instructions

  • Keep dry — wipe with a soft cloth if it gets wet, never submerge
  • Apply leather conditioner once a year (we recommend Saphir Renovateur)
  • Patina is permanent and intentional — your leather will darken and soften over time
  • The painted portrait is sealed and will not smudge or fade with normal use

Frequently asked

How long until my keychain arrives?
4 weeks of artisan work after you approve the digital proof, plus 5-10 days free worldwide shipping. Total: roughly 5-6 weeks. Express Production cuts this to 2-3 weeks (+$29).

Does the painting fade?
No. Our paints are professional-grade, lightfast, and sealed with three layers of clear waterproof finish. With normal pocket-and-bag wear, the portrait will look the same in 10 years.

Will the leather darken or change color?
Yes — and this is the point. Vegetable-tanned leather develops a "patina" with use. It darkens, softens, and takes on a deep glow. After 12 months, your keychain will look noticeably more beautiful than the day it arrived.

Can I get my pet's name engraved?
Yes. Free engraving up to 20 characters on the back. Name, date, or short message ("Forever, Bear"). Hand-stamped, not printed.

What if I lose my keychain?
Email us with proof of original order — we offer a discounted remake for lost original-order keychains within 12 months of delivery.

Is this suitable for a memorial gift?
Yes — it is one of our most-given memorial pieces. We treat memorial orders with extra care. If your gift is for someone grieving, add a note at checkout and we will include a hand-written sympathy card at no extra cost.

How is this different from a printed photo keychain?
Printed keychains use industrial photo transfer onto plastic or thin metal. Ours is hand-painted onto vegetable-tanned leather by a real artisan. Printed fades in 1-2 years; ours improves with age. The price reflects the difference.

— OUR STORY —

Made by hand. Made to outlive us.

Heirloom Paw was born the day I lost Momo, my first cat. I had hundreds of photos — but nothing I could hold. Nothing my hands could touch on the nights I missed her most.

So I taught myself the slow crafts — needle felting, leather, hand-painting on shell. Six months later I held the first piece: her face, made by hand. Something with weight. Something my children, one day, will inherit.

Today, our small studio crafts heirlooms for pet families around the world. Made by people. Made to last generations.
